The stability of subsea pipelines, marine risers and offshore structures can be compromised by fluid-structure interaction. Vortex induced vibrations lead to fatigue of flow lines under free span and risers.


To determine the conditions under which vortex induced vibrations occur, fluid simulation was performed. It allows determining the pressure variations on pipe, and eventually computing fatigue life. Mitigation measures were evaluated numerically.


It was possible to determine the loading pattern and compare it to the pipeline’s characteristics. Mitigation measures, decreasing the loading on the pipeline were identified. Loading pattern can be tested on the resonant bending system to evaluate fatigue resistance of welded joints.
