To assure adequate toughness in the heat affected zone, a steel component manufacturer requested assistance with the steel selection from his suppliers, taking into account his current welding process.


MSC organised sampling of different industrial materials, complemented by laboratory casted samples produced at the Metal Processing Centre (MPC). All materials were characterised, and submitted to welding simulation using a Gleeble simulator. These parts were then tested for impact toughness at different temperatures. Microstructure and fracture surface were also characterised.


From the experiments, guidelines were issued concerning material selection. These were later applied in an offshore project.
